Model History and Information: The Douglas TBD Devastator was the US Navy's standard carrier torpedo bomber at the start of the Pacific War, but by 1942 it was slow and outclassed. At the Battle of Midway on 4 June 1942, Torpedo Squadron 8 flew from USS Hornet under Lieutenant Commander John C. Waldron. Pressing home their attack at low level and without fighter escort, the squadron was torn apart by Japanese fighters and anti-aircraft fire; every one of its Devastators was lost and only one man, Ensign George Gay, survived. Their sacrifice, with the other torpedo squadrons, drew away the defences and helped the American dive bombers strike the decisive blow. This model represents a VT-8 Devastator of that day.
