Model History and Information: Germany trained its Tornado interdictor/strike crews in the clear skies and open ranges of the American Southwest for more than two decades. Under an arrangement with the U.S. Air Force, the Luftwaffe's flying training centre operated from Holloman Air Force Base, New Mexico, running weapons-system, instructor and fighter-weapons-instructor courses on the variable-geometry bomber. This interdictor/strike jet wore the centre's standard training-fleet markings. Year-round good weather and uncongested airspace suited low-level tactics, weapons delivery and instrument flying. Flight operations at Holloman ceased in 2017, after which crew conversion returned to Germany. The type entered service in the early 1980s as a joint British, West German and Italian program, remaining a Luftwaffe front-line asset for decades.
