Model History and Information: Italy committed a detachment of interdictor/strike Tornados to the 1991 Gulf War coalition, deploying from Gioia del Colle to Al Dhafra in the United Arab Emirates under the national codename Locusta. The aircraft flew night interdiction sorties against Iraqi targets from the campaign's opening on 16-17 January 1991. This airframe was lost on 18 January during Italy's first combat mission, brought down by anti-aircraft fire after its attack run; both crew members ejected and were taken prisoner, being released at the war's end. It was the only Italian Tornado lost in the conflict. Across the campaign the detachment flew more than two hundred sorties, marking Italy's first combat deployment since the Second World War.
