Model History and Information: The Lockheed U-2 Dragon Lady is a single-engine, high-altitude reconnaissance aircraft designed by Kelly Johnson's Skunk Works, operating above 70,000 feet since the 1950s. In the mid-1990s the fleet was upgraded from U-2R to U-2S standard, re-engined with the General Electric F118 turbofan. The type remains in front-line US Air Force service with the 9th Reconnaissance Wing at Beale Air Force Base, California, valued for its ability to retask surveillance objectives on short notice. Airframe 80-1094 appeared at the Royal International Air Tattoo at RAF Fairford in 2025, where U-2S operations were represented by the 99th Reconnaissance Squadron.
