Model History and Information: The quarter-ton 4x4 utility truck originated from a 1940 U.S. Army requirement for a light reconnaissance vehicle. American Bantam built the first prototype, but the Army shared the design with Willys-Overland and Ford, which mass-produced the standardized Willys MB and Ford GPW from 1941. More than 640,000 were built during World War II. Powered by the Willys "Go Devil" four-cylinder engine, it seated three to four and served in every theater for reconnaissance, liaison, cargo, and casualty evacuation. All U.S. services operated it, including the Navy and Marine Corps, which used jeeps ashore for transport and logistics during amphibious landings and beachhead operations. It remains one of the most recognizable vehicles of the war.
