Model History and Information: The Northrop/McDonnell Douglas YF-23 was one of two prototypes built for the US Air Force's Advanced Tactical Fighter competition, a twin-engine stealth demonstrator emphasizing supersonic cruise and low observability. Both airframes flew in 1990: the first, serial 87-0800, used Pratt & Whitney YF119 engines, while the second, serial 87-0801, was powered by General Electric YF120 engines. The design routed engine exhaust through shielded upper-surface troughs to cut its infrared signature and, unlike its Lockheed rival, did not use thrust vectoring. After evaluation the Air Force chose the competing YF-22 in 1991, and the YF-23 never entered production.
