Model History and Information: The Spitfire Mk I entered RAF service in 1938 with No. 19 Squadron at Duxford, and examples armed with eight machine guns were later designated Mk Ia. Spitfire X4009 was issued to No. 234 Squadron in August 1940 and flown by Flight Lieutenant Paterson Clarence Hughes, an Australian who served as a flight commander with the squadron during the Battle of Britain. On 7 September 1940, while intercepting a large raid on London, Hughes was killed when X4009 crashed in Kent. The wreck was later recovered for restoration. This model represents Spitfire X4009 as flown by Hughes in 1940.
