Model History and Information: Switzerland selected the F/A-18C/D Hornet in the early 1990s to replace ageing Mirage III and Tiger II fighters. Between 1996 and 1999 the Swiss Air Force received 34 aircraft, 26 single-seat C models and eight two-seat D models, assembled under licence at Emmen. Serialled in the J-50xx range, the fleet forms the backbone of Swiss air-policing and air-defence, operating from hardened bases including Payerne and Meiringen and receiving successive avionics and structural upgrades to extend service life toward eventual replacement by the F-35A. J-5026, a single-seat legacy C, is a representative example of this long-serving Swiss Hornet force.
