Model History and Information: The Chengdu J-7 is a Chinese fighter developed as a licensed derivative of the Soviet MiG-21, sharing that aircraft's tailed-delta layout and light single-engine configuration. Progressive Chinese development produced a range of variants, including improved-avionics and all-weather models. Armed with cannon and short-range infrared-guided air-to-air missiles, the J-7 served for decades as a mainstay interceptor and point-defence fighter with the People's Liberation Army Air Force, and was widely exported under the F-7 designation. Production continued into the twenty-first century, making it one of the most numerous Chinese jet fighters ever built. The type has since been progressively withdrawn from front-line Chinese units.
