Model History and Information: The MiG-21MFN was the Czech Air Force's NATO-compatible development of the Soviet-built MiG-21MF. Ten MF airframes were upgraded to MFN standard, receiving Western avionics and communications equipment so the type could operate within NATO after the Czech Republic joined the alliance in 1999. The aircraft served as an interim fighter while the air force selected a Western replacement, flying air-defence duties from Caslav, the country's principal fighter base. Airframe 2500 wore the markings of the 41st Fighter Squadron in October 2002. The MFN fleet reached the end of its service life in 2005, when the Saab JAS 39 Gripen assumed the Czech air-defence mission, ending more than four decades of MiG-21 operations.
