Model History and Information: The Douglas SBD Dauntless was the US Navy's principal carrier scout and dive bomber through the middle years of the Pacific war, valued for steady handling and accurate diving. In the Atlantic it supported Operation Torch, the Allied landings in French Morocco that opened on 8 November 1942. Operating from USS Ranger, then the largest carrier in the Atlantic Fleet, Dauntless scout bombers launched before dawn from a position northwest of Casablanca to strike coastal airfields and shore defenses as Vichy French forces resisted during the Naval Battle of Casablanca. The scouting unit tied to this aircraft flew from Ranger's flight deck in that campaign. It was among the type's earliest actions supporting an amphibious invasion.
