Model History and Information: Japan announced in November 1960 that the Starfighter would be its standard air superiority fighter, and gave the licence manufacturing work to an industrial group led by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries. The first three aircraft came complete from Lockheed, twenty-nine more were assembled from knocked-down kits between 1962 and 1965, and Mitsubishi then built 178 from scratch through 1967. The Japanese version, the F-104J, was equipped as an all-weather interceptor rather than for strike work. It entered service in October 1966 and flew until 1986.
