Model History and Information: The single-seat F/A-18C Hornet became a standard U.S. Navy carrier fighter during the late Cold War and post-Cold War period. It was built to switch between air-to-air and strike missions without changing basic aircraft configuration. VFA-82 traced its lineage to Attack Squadron 82, established in 1967 flying the A-7 Corsair II; it was redesignated Strike Fighter Squadron 82 in 1987 and became the first Navy squadron to fly the F/A-18C. Flying from USS America during Operation Desert Storm in December 1990, the "Marauders" flew 597 combat sorties and delivered more than 1.2 million pounds of ordnance. Based at NAS Cecil Field and later at MCAS Beaufort, the squadron also supported operations over Afghanistan after 2001 before it was disestablished on 30 September 2005.
