Model History and Information: Major General Sulom-Bek Oskanov headed the combat training centre at Lipetsk. On 7 February 1992 the MiG-29 he was flying in poor weather suffered an electronics failure that left him without an artificial horizon. Rather than eject over a populated area, he stayed with the aircraft to steer it clear and was killed. He was made a Hero of the Russian Federation posthumously, the first person to receive the decoration after death and the second overall, and Russian aircraft have since carried his name.
