The P-38J Lighting was a twin-engine, single-seat fighter aircraft used by the United States Army Air Forces (USAAF) during World War II. Major Thomas B. McGuire, Jr. was a highly decorated American fighter pilot and flying ace during World War II. He was one of the top-scoring American aces of the war, with 38 confirmed aerial victories. McGuire flew the P-38J Lighting and was a member of the USAAF's 49th Fighter Group. He was awarded the Medal of Honor posthumously for his actions in the Philippines in January 1945. McGuire remains a respected and well-known figure in the history of American military aviation.
