Model History and Information: Bismarck was the first of two Bismarck-class battleships built for Germany's Kriegsmarine and, with her sister Tirpitz, among the largest warships ever completed by a European navy. Laid down at Blohm & Voss in Hamburg in 1936 and launched in 1939, she was commissioned in August 1940. Her main battery comprised eight 38 cm guns in four twin turrets. During her only offensive sortie, Operation Rheinuebung in May 1941, she sailed with the cruiser Prinz Eugen and sank the British battlecruiser HMS Hood in the Denmark Strait. Pursued across the North Atlantic by the Royal Navy and crippled by an air-launched torpedo, she was sunk on 27 May 1941 after a career of only eight months.
