Model History and Information: Lockheed's P-38 Lightning was an American twin-engine fighter built around a distinctive dual-boom airframe with a central cockpit nacelle. It flew in every major American theater of World War II, including North Africa, Italy, Western Europe and the Pacific, where its long range made it valuable for extended missions. Early European models suffered from compressibility problems in high-speed dives, later addressed with dive flaps. In the Pacific, the type was flown by the two top-scoring American aces of the war and was credited with destroying more Japanese aircraft than any other U.S. Army Air Forces fighter. Lockheed built more than 10,000 examples between 1941 and 1945.
