Model History and Information: Caterpillar introduced the 988 large wheel loader in 1963, and the line has remained in continuous production for more than sixty years, making it one of the company's longest-running large wheel loader families. Quarries and mines use it mainly to load haul trucks and hoppers, a job that demands high breakout force and a powertrain built for continuous shifts.
