Model History and Information: The Leopard 1 was West Germany's first post-war main battle tank, built by Krauss-Maffei in Munich and armed with a 105 mm rifled gun. The first series vehicle was handed over to the Bundeswehr on 9 September 1965, and the design quickly drew orders from other NATO members. Belgium became the first export customer, receiving 334 Leopard 1BE tanks between 1968 and 1971. These tanks equipped eight Belgian tank regiments and the Armour School, and the 4th Lancers was the first regiment to receive the new type. From 1974 the Belgian vehicles were modified with a gun stabilization system and an automatic fire control system supplied by SABCA, allowing the main gun to fire effectively on the move.
