Model History and Information: Moving a seventy-tonne tank any distance by road wears out its tracks and its crew, so armies carry them on transporters. The American system pairs an Oshkosh M1070 tractor with a DRS M1000 semi-trailer, a combination that replaced the older M911 and M747 and can haul an Abrams, a self-propelled gun, an armoured bulldozer or anything else up to that weight. The Army ordered 1,066 trailers in 1989 and 1,044 tractors, with production of the M1070 starting in July 1992. Both halves can be flown in a C-5 or a C-17.
