Model History and Information: The Sea Dragon is the United States Navy's dedicated airborne mine countermeasures helicopter, and the largest helicopter flown in the West until the CH-53K arrived. Developed from the CH-53E with more fuel and greater weight, it first flew in December 1981 and entered Navy service in 1986. Its primary work is towing minehunting and minesweeping gear through the water behind the aircraft, a job that demands sustained low-level flying under heavy drag. In its second role it is a heavy lifter, able to carry some sixteen tons over short distances or deliver up to fifty-five people.
