Model History and Information: South Africa ordered the Mirage III to replace its Sabres, taking delivery of sixteen IIICZ interceptors between December 1962 and March 1964 and equipping No. 2 Squadron, the Cheetahs, which converted onto the type in 1963. The aircraft served through the border war in South West Africa and Angola, moving to Hoedspruit at the end of 1978. As the Mirage F1 took over front-line duties the older machines fell back to daytime interception, training and photographic reconnaissance, and the squadron flew them until October 1990.
