Model History and Information: Western Star's specification sheet for the 4900 describes a truck offered in set-forward (SF), set-back (SB), extended-hood (EX) and extreme-duty (XD) versions, with the SF and SB models sharing a 123-inch bumper-to-back-of-cab dimension. The SF layout reproduced here keeps the steer axle in the forward position. The same literature lists Meritor tridem rear axles alongside tandem options, Detroit DD15 and DD16 or Cummins X15 engines, and a galvannealed steel cab in standard or severe-duty form. When Daimler Truck introduced the Western Star 49X in 2020, it measured the new cab's weight savings against the 4900 then in production. This replica shows the 4900 SF as a day cab tractor with a tridem rear axle group.
