Model History and Information: Piedmont Airlines grew from a regional carrier in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, into one of the major domestic airlines of the 1980s, built around hubs such as Charlotte. In 1987 it took the step into long-haul flying with the Boeing 767-200ER, using the extended-range twin to open transatlantic service from Charlotte to London Gatwick. The 767-200ER's added fuel capacity and higher weights made that kind of long overwater route practical for a twin-engine aircraft. Piedmont's time as an international airline was short: it was acquired by USAir, and the two carriers were fully merged in 1989.
