Model History and Information: Hughes Airwest traced its roots to the 1968 merger of Bonanza, Pacific and West Coast Airlines into Air West. Howard Hughes bought the airline soon afterwards, and it was renamed Hughes Airwest, becoming known for its bright yellow livery across a network that stretched throughout the western United States. The Douglas DC-9 was the core of its jet fleet, well matched to the many short sectors between western cities. Hughes Airwest was acquired by Republic Airlines in 1980 and its aircraft were absorbed into the Republic fleet.
