Model History and Information: Republic Airlines was formed in 1979 through the merger of North Central Airlines and Southern Airways, and it grew further in 1980 by acquiring Hughes Airwest. The result was one of the largest domestic networks in the United States, with the Douglas DC-9 as its most numerous aircraft. The Series 10 DC-9s in its fleet came from several sources, and the type's short-runway ability suited Republic's many smaller markets. Republic was acquired by Northwest Airlines in 1986, and its DC-9s continued to fly in Northwest colours.
