Model History and Information:The DC-9 was Douglas's answer to the short-haul jet market: a small, rear-engined twin with a T-tail, able to work from runways that could not take the first generation of jetliners and designed to operate without ground support equipment. It was certified by the Federal Aviation Administration on 23 November 1965, and the first Series 10 aircraft entered service that December. Eastern Air Lines flew DC-9s from the middle of the decade until the carrier ceased operations in 1991, using them on the dense short and medium-haul network it built along the eastern seaboard.
