Model History and Information:Trans World Airlines ordered twenty Douglas DC-9s and put the first into service on 17 March 1966. They were Series 10 aircraft, in the -14 and -15 sub-variants, and they stayed with the airline through the following decade. The DC-9 could work from relatively short runways, which made it the natural choice for the short-haul trunk and regional routes of the hub system TWA was building around New York, St. Louis and the Midwest. It replaced propeller equipment on those services, and by April 1967, when the last scheduled Constellation flight was flown, TWA operated an all-jet fleet.
