Model History and Information: The Cat 587T is a large pipelayer built for installing big-diameter pipe on major pipeline projects, using a track-type tractor base to carry a side-mounted boom and lifting counterweight. It is powered by a Cat C15 diesel engine with ACERT technology producing 366 hp (273 kW) at 1,800 rpm and carries a rated lifting capacity of 202,000 lb. Independent hydraulic winches with oil-disc brakes drive the boom and hook, giving infinitely variable speed control and secure retention when a load is held in place. The hydraulically extendible counterweight improves load balance and ground clearance, a tapered hood and notched fuel tank aid operator sightlines, and Finger Tip Control lets the operator manage steering, direction, and gear selection with one hand. As one of Caterpillar's larger pipelayers, the 587T is used on demanding energy-infrastructure work.
