Caterpillar released the No. 70 towed scraper in 1946 for use behind D7-sized tractors, with a clean design and a bell-shaped bowl that loaded aggressively, especially in clay; it held 8.7 cubic yards struck and 11 cubic yards heaped. The current-production Cat 621K, by contrast, is a self-propelled wheel tractor-scraper that cuts, loads, hauls, and spreads earth in a single pass, powered by a Cat C13 engine rated at 304 kW (407 hp) with a 24 cubic yard heaped bowl capacity, built for fast cycle times on earthmoving and site-development projects.
