Model History and Information: The Cat 789 is a large off-highway mining truck, the industry's most popular hauler in its 193-tonne (213-ton) payload class for surface mining operations. The next-generation model introduced a Cat 3516E sixteen-cylinder engine offered at 1,900 hp (1,417 kW), to match the performance of existing fleet trucks, or 2,100 hp (1,566 kW) for faster cycle times, meeting Tier 4 Final emissions standards with selective catalytic reduction. Caterpillar states the update delivers up to 9 percent lower fuel consumption than the prior Tier 2 design along with 12 percent more engine durability, and gives the truck a cab that is 17 percent wider with more legroom and shoulder room for the operator.
