The XE designation identifies the version fitted with Caterpillar's continuously variable transmission, which the manufacturer states integrates the engine, hydraulic, and cooling systems to increase performance and fuel efficiency compared with the standard torque-converter version. Current production of the 972 runs a Cat C9.3B engine, and Caterpillar also offers seat-mounted electro-hydraulic joystick steering as an alternative to a conventional steering wheel, reducing the arm movement needed to steer the loader through repeated loading cycles.
