Model History and Information: The Traxcavator name covers Caterpillar's line of crawler-tractor-based loaders, which combine a tracked undercarriage with a front-mounted hydraulic loader arm and bucket for digging, loading, and material handling on soft or uneven ground where a wheeled loader has less traction. The 977 was one of three new Traxcavator models, alongside the smaller 933 and 955, that Caterpillar introduced in early 1955, following its December 1951 purchase of the Trackson Company, whose earlier cable-operated Traxcavators had been sold under the Caterpillar name. The 977D represents a later generation within that long-running model line.
