Model History and Information: The Cat® No. 12 traces back to July 1938, when Caterpillar's road machinery division launched the Caterpillar Diesel No. 12 Auto Patrol, a self-propelled grader designed for efficient, economical road building and maintenance. Its six-cylinder Caterpillar diesel engine delivered 66 brake horsepower and was mounted over the driving axle to help prevent wheel slippage, driving a transmission with six forward speeds and two in reverse. The blade could rotate completely around to face backwards, letting the operator keep grading while driving in reverse, a feature useful for subgrade work and tight turning spots. The No. 12 went on to become the longest-running production model in Caterpillar's motor grader line, with its design lineage continuing today in the Cat 12M series. This 1:50 Vintage Series model reproduces that original Auto Patrol-era grader.
