Model History and Information: The Cat® D5 is a medium track-type tractor (dozer) used for grading, dozing, and general site work. LGP (low ground pressure) configurations replace the standard undercarriage with wider track shoes, which Caterpillar states increase ground contact area for better flotation and stability on soft, sloping, or sensitive ground where a standard undercarriage would sink or lose traction. Depending on the specific D5 model, Caterpillar has offered LGP shoe widths up to about 30 inches (762 mm), about 50 percent wider than the standard-configuration undercarriage. The wider footprint makes LGP dozers a common choice for land clearing, fire-line cutting, and finish grading.
