Model History and Information: Western Star introduced the 49X in September 2020, a vocational truck that Daimler Truck said was designed from the ground up to be tougher, safer and lighter. Its X-Series cab is built from aluminum with steel reinforcements and was announced as 8 percent lighter than the cab of the 4900 then in production. Before launch the cab was crushed with 10 metric tons, the frame went through 10,000 twists, and testing included more than 400 hours on full-vehicle and component shakers. Western Star positions the 49X for construction, logging, oilfield and over-the-road hauling, with Detroit DD15 and DD16 engines and tridem drive axle options.
