Model History and Information: The Cat D7E track-type tractor features an electric drive system that Caterpillar describes as first-of-its-kind. In October 2012 the company announced that it had shipped the 500th D7E from its East Peoria, Illinois facility. The tractor meets U.S. EPA Tier 4 Interim and EU Stage IIIB emission standards. Pre-production studies suggested 10 to 30 percent better fuel economy than the previous D7 model, depending on the application, and Product Link data showed customers had saved more than 1.4 million gallons (5.3 million liters) of diesel compared with the D7R. Early buyers included K&E Excavating of Salem, Oregon, which replaced a D7R, and Mectec Pty Ltd, which bought the first D7E shipped to Australia for work in renewable forests.
