Model History and Information: The Lockheed F-104G was the multi-role version of the Starfighter built in large numbers for NATO air forces, and it became a mainstay of West German air defence through the 1960s and 1970s. Jagdgeschwader 74 was activated at Neuburg an der Donau in May 1961 and converted from the F-86K Sabre to the F-104G between 1964 and 1965, flying the type in the air-defence role from its Bavarian base. In November 1973 the wing received Werner Moelders as its patron, an honour it carried until 2005. It flew its last Starfighter mission on 30 June 1974 before re-equipping with the F-4F Phantom II. Airframe 24+68 is presented in the wing's markings from that Starfighter era.
