Model History and Information: Air Test and Evaluation Squadron 9, the Vampires, is a United States Navy operational test unit based at Naval Air Weapons Station China Lake, California, and marks its aircraft with the tail code XE. The squadron evaluates weapons systems and tactics for fleet aircraft including the F/A-18E/F Super Hornet, EA-18G Growler and the F-35C. The C is the carrier-based variant of the Lightning II, featuring larger folding wings, strengthened landing gear and a robust tailhook for catapult launches and arrested recoveries aboard aircraft carriers.
