Model History and Information: After the Falklands conflict stretched Britain's air defenses, the Royal Air Force bought fifteen second-hand F-4J Phantoms from the United States Navy as a stop-gap measure, refurbishing them to a common British standard. With these aircraft No. 74 (Fighter) Squadron, the famous Tiger Squadron, was reformed at Wattisham, Suffolk, in October 1984 after thirteen years dormant. From there its crews stood quick-reaction alert, intercepting Soviet maritime patrol aircraft over the North Sea and exercising against NATO and US Navy fighters. The unit flew the type until re-equipping with standard RAF Phantoms in early 1991. This airframe was one of that batch of ex-Navy machines; individual history beyond the squadron is not independently documented here.
