Model History and Information: The United States Navy formed its flight exhibition team in April 1946, and on 15 June that year three lightened Grumman F6F-5 Hellcats, painted sea blue with gold trim and led by Lieutenant Commander Roy Voris, flew the team's first public performance at Craig Field in Jacksonville, Florida. The routine lasted fifteen minutes, with a fourth Hellcat held in reserve. The team took its name a month later, after the pilots saw a New York nightclub called the Blue Angel advertised in a magazine. The Hellcat gave way to the F8F Bearcat before the year was out.
