Model History and Information: The X-62A is a one-of-a-kind experimental aircraft developed from an F-16D Fighting Falcon by General Dynamics and Calspan for the US Air Force. Originally the NF-16D VISTA, a variable-stability in-flight simulator built on a Block 30 airframe with multi-axis thrust vectoring, it was redesignated X-62A in 2021 and remains part of the Air Force Test Pilot School curriculum at Edwards Air Force Base. Under DARPA's Air Combat Evolution (ACE) program it flew autonomously against a human-piloted F-16 in the first artificial-intelligence-versus-human dogfights, publicly announced in April 2024. On 2 May 2024 the Secretary of the Air Force flew aboard the AI-controlled jet. As a research testbed it validates flight-control and autonomy software rather than employing operational weapons.
