Model History and Information: The Cat 785 is a mining truck that Caterpillar describes as its first entry into the mining industry, more than three decades ago. It was developed for high production mining applications, keeping material moving at high volume to lower cost per ton, and its mechanical drive powertrain and power shift transmission are intended for steep grades, poor underfoot conditions and haul roads with high rolling resistance. The truck also fits into Caterpillar's loading systems: the standard 994K wheel loader is sized to fill a 785 in four passes.
