Model History and Information: Volkswagen introduced the Type 2 commercial van, commonly known as the Transporter or Kombi, in 1950 as a rear-engine, cab-over companion to the Beetle-based Type 1. Its flat cargo floor and boxy body made it well suited to delivery and cargo work, and the T1 generation remained in production until 1967, when it was replaced by the redesigned T2. The van built a lasting following among small businesses and, later, collectors and van clubs worldwide.
