Model History and Information: The Cat 24M was, before the newer Cat 24 replaced it, one of Caterpillar's largest motor graders, built for heavy grading and maintenance of large mine haul roads and major earthworks. It was powered by a Cat C18 ACERT engine, an 18.1-liter six-cylinder Caterpillar rates at a base net power of 533 hp (397 kW), driving a 7.3-meter (24-foot) moldboard on a machine with a gross operating weight Caterpillar lists near 145,000 lb. Its successor, the Cat 24, added 15 percent more low-end torque and an 11 percent weight increase over the 24M for extra blade-down pressure and tractive force, but the 24M's long moldboard and high horsepower already let it move and shape large volumes of material at big mines.
