Model History and Information: The StuG III Ausf.A was the first production assault gun, created to give German infantry a protected gun that could accompany an attack instead of waiting for towed artillery. Daimler-Benz built the initial series in 1940 on the Panzer III chassis, with the short 7.5 cm StuK 37 L/24 in a fixed casemate. The type first saw combat with German units during the 1940 campaign in France, where its low silhouette and direct-fire role proved the concept for the assault-gun program. Later StuG versions from 1942 onward gained the long 7.5 cm StuK 40 gun and a reputation as a capable tank destroyer, but the Ausf.A remains the type's original, short-gunned infantry-support form.
