Model History and Information: The original StuG III Ausf. A carried a short 7.5 cm gun because its job was to smash strongpoints, not fight tanks. Its casemate, built on Panzer III running gear, removed the expense and height of a rotating turret while giving the crew armour protection. The first production batch was small, but combat experience in 1940 established the value of assault artillery close to the infantry. Later StuG versions gained long anti-tank guns and a different reputation; this straw-grass finish deliberately returns the collector to the short-gun beginning of that much larger programme.
