Model History and Information: Before he became one of the war's best-known Tiger commanders, Michael Wittmann served in the Leibstandarte SS Adolf Hitler's Sturmgeschutz battery, where he commanded a StuG III rather than a tank with a rotating turret. In spring 1941 his unit, SS Panzer Regiment 1, moved to the Eastern Front for the opening of Operation Barbarossa, well before he took over a Tiger I in 1943, the tank with which he is now identified. The Ausf.A itself was the first production StuG, built on the Panzer III chassis with a short 7.5 cm StuK 37 L/24 gun in a low, fixed casemate for direct infantry support rather than long-range tank duels.
