Model History and Information: The Cat 657G is a large, tandem-powered wheel tractor-scraper used for high-production earthmoving on large site-development and mining projects. A Cat C18 ACERT engine powers the tractor and a Cat C15 ACERT engine powers the scraper, both with dual-horsepower capability that runs at a lower setting in torque-converter drive and a higher setting in direct drive; the tandem arrangement gives the machine power to climb steep grades and all-wheel drive for soft, slippery ground. The scraper uses a redesigned, low-profile bowl of cellular construction for strength and dent resistance, a bulldozer-type ejection system for controlled spreading, and an electronically controlled eight-speed forward transmission. Caterpillar also offers an auger arrangement for self-loading and a push-pull attachment that lets two 657G units work together as a combined loading system.
