The A-10 Thunderbolt II, also known as the Warthog, is a single-seat, twin-engine, straight-wing jet aircraft designed for close air support of ground forces. It was developed by Fairchild Republic for the United States Air Force (USAF), and first flew in May 1972. It is the only aircraft specifically designed for close air support and has been in service with the USAF since 1977. It is armed with a Gatling gun, air-to-surface missiles, and laser-guided bombs, and is capable of delivering a wide range of ordnance. The A-10 has seen extensive combat in the Gulf War, Iraq War, War in Afghanistan, and the Libyan Civil War, among other engagements. It is highly maneuverable at low speeds and altitudes and has excellent survivability due to its large size and robust construction. The A-10 is known for its ability to absorb battle damage and continue flying, earning it the nickname "the tankbuster".
